Snowy Owls is one of our two Reception classes and is taught by Mr Myers with support from Nursery Nurse Miss Black. Additional support is also provided by our team of bi-lingual assistants which includes Mrs Dziopa and Mrs Haddouche.
The school day begins at 8.50am and ends at 3.15pm, with a break for lunch from 12.00 noon until 1.00pm.
In the morning session, the children are taught Communication, Language and Literacy as well as Mathematics. During these 20 minute inputs, the children are able to work as part of a whole class, in small groups or with their Kagan Partners. The children also complete two designated focused tasks each week that allow them to apply key skills modelled during inputs.
During the afternoon session, Phonics is taught to develop the children's reading and writing skills. At Hillside, we follow a topic-based curriculum, in which children learn through a play based approach. Throughout the day, the children are able explore the Reception environment both within the classroom and outdoors.
The children receive weekly Forest School sessions which are taught by Miss Wood. Mr Bass, one of our gardeners, also supports planting and growing activities. In Forest school, the children make use of both the schools extensive grounds as well as local woods.
In Snowy Owls, the children have a timetabled PE session each Monday. The children are encouraged to change into their own PE kit to develop independence. Please ensure that all items of clothing have your child’s name inside and that PE kits remain in school during the week.
Reading books are sent home weekly on a Friday. Please ensure that these are returned to school the following Wednesday. To allow children to become familiar with stories and develop comprehension, it is recommended that school books are read more than once during the week at home. This will ensure that children become confident. in handling books and using story language to retell events.
In Foundation, we celebrate the children’s achievements during Golden Assembly each week on a Friday afternoon at 2:40pm. Parents are invited to attend to share in the celebration.
